If it feels like autumn, then it must be time for tech companies to release new devices. Last week, Apple launched new iPhones and Amazon announced new Kindle ereaders.

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading to a new Kindle or trying Amazon’s reader for the first time, you should check out Amazon’s latest offerings. The improvements may tempt you to try these new devices.

Amazon Kindle 2022

Amazon’s base model Kindle has received an overhaul that may make it seem much less like a base model. The 2022 Kindle is lighter, brighter, and has twice the storage of the previous model. This year’s Kindle weighs more than ½ pound (12 g) less than last year’s model. The 2022 Kindle weighs 5.56 oz (158 g), compared to the previous model’s weight of 6.1 oz (170 g).

The new Kindle also displays a sharper font on its larger 6-inch (15.24 cm) screen. According to Amazon, “The upgraded 300 ppi high-resolution glare-free display features more than 3x as many pixels as the previous generation.”

A dark mode is available on the Kindle screen for those who prefer that option. => See, Going Dark — How to Get Dark Mode on Your Devices and Apps

The 2022 Kindle’s screen is illuminated by 4 LED lights that point toward the screen.

For those who like to load their Kindle with books, this new Kindle offers twice the storage at 16 GB instead of 8 GB.

Charging has been improved as well. This new Kindle charges via a USB-C cord instead of a micro-USB. This change allows for faster charging. According to Amazon, this new Kindle can last up to six weeks before it needs to be charged.

Availability

The 2022 Kindle is available for pre-order now from Amazon for $99.00 in black or denim. The release day is October 12, 2022.

Kindle Paperwhite 5

Amazon also upgraded its Kindle Paperwhite 5, which now offers a 16 GB storage option. When the Kindle Paperwhite 5 was launched in October 2021, the only storage option was 8 GB.

This year, Amazon is offering a 16 GB storage option for only $10 more than the 8 GB model.

The Kindle Paperwhite 5 is water-resistant, which may be helpful if you like to read at the pool or beach, or in the bathtub. According to Amazon, “Kindle Paperwhite is IPX8 rated to protect against accidental immersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes, and up to 0.25 meters of seawater for up to 3 minutes.”

The Kindle Paperwhite 5 has a 6.8-inch (17.27 cm) screen that offers an amber mode. You can change the screen color to amber from white manually or schedule amber mode to turn on and off automatically every day at a set time.

17 LED lights point at the Kindle Paperwhite 5 screen for better viewing in bright light and outdoors.

The Kindle Paperwhite 5 is available in black from Amazon for $139.99 for 8 GB of storage and $149.99 for 16 GB of storage.

Your Thoughts

Have you been thinking about getting a Kindle reader or upgrading your existing Kindle? Do you like the idea of additional storage so you can add more books and audiobooks to your device? Would you spend the extra money to get a water-resistant Kindle Paperwhite 5?
